Arduino Enhances Precision for 12V Worm Gear Motors

When a project requires precise alignment of 26 fixed points on a 12-inch disk but is constrained by a mere 3.5 inches of vertical clearance, traditional stepper motors often prove too bulky. The JGY-370 worm gear motor emerges as an ideal solution, combining a compact form factor with self-locking capabilities. However, for Arduino beginners, driving this encoder-equipped DC motor presents greater challenges than the mechanical design itself.

Selecting the Right Driver

The first critical step involves avoiding common misconceptions. GRBL expansion boards, frequently used in CNC applications, are designed for stepper motors and fundamentally incompatible with DC motors like the JGY-370. Two practical alternatives exist:

  • L298N Motor Driver Module: An economical choice with extensive documentation, perfectly suited for beginners. Capable of handling 12V motors effectively.
  • BTS7960 Driver: Offers superior current-handling capacity for more demanding applications.

Precision Positioning Through Encoder Integration

The true technical challenge lies in accurate positioning. The motor's encoder serves as the cornerstone for achieving "precision alignment" by providing real-time rotational feedback. Implementation requires:

  • Connecting the encoder's output pins to Arduino's interrupt pins
  • Developing pulse-counting algorithms to calculate disk rotation angles
  • Implementing PID control to enable motor deceleration as the target position approaches

This closed-loop control system effectively prevents overshooting due to inertia, enabling smooth and precise movement between all 26 positions. The solution addresses both spatial constraints and positioning accuracy requirements simultaneously.
